How to Use Lemongrass Essential Oil
From pet care to personal care, here’s how to use lemongrass essential oil in your natural lifestyle.
I first learned about lemongrass oil from my veterinarian. He recommended an all-natural flea and tick repellent product made with a blend of essential oils for my dog with sensitive skin. Lemongrass was on the ingredients list. So, I started to do some digging and learned that lemongrass is useful beyond pet products-it works well for human self-care, too! Here’s how to use lemongrass essential oil in your natural lifestyle.
What Is Lemongrass Oil?
Lemongrass is a perennial grass found in Algeria, as well as tropical regions in Asia, South America, and Africa. The long, thin blades of the plant are cultivated for its essential oil, which is obtained via steam distillation.
The resulting product is cymbopogon flexuosus oil, which has antiseptic and antibacterial abilities as well as deodorizing properties.
An article published in the journal Biochimie Open explains that lemongrass essential oil benefits also include anti-inflammatory effects and antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
This oil is used in the production of many beauty and personal care items, including perfumes, cosmetics, and natural deodorant, thanks to its many benefits.
How to Use Lemongrass Essential Oil
Incorporating lemongrass oil into your day is actually pretty simple. Its lovely citrus scent may already be part of your routine without you even knowing. Scan the ingredient lists of your favorite facial wash, premade essential oil blend, or massaging oil. Lemongrass might be there!
If not, there are a few different ways you can easily harness the benefits of lemongrass oil:
- Use a topical application with a carrier oil. To try this method, you canmix a few drops of lemongrass oil with almond oil in a refillable rollerball-topped bottle and apply it to the skin on your feet to moisturize and deodorize the area.
- Breathe in the vapors from an essential oil diffuser. Diffuse lemongrass oil mixed with orange essential oil in your home for a perky, vibrant scent to start your morning off right.
- Tap into steam-fueled aromatherapy. Place a few drops of lemongrass essential oil on the floor of your shower (in a far corner, away from the drain) and let the invigorating aroma fill the small space while you lather up.
- Use personal care products made with lemongrass oil. Select shampoos, deodorants, or other personal care products that incorporate lemongrass essential oil in their formulas.
Lemongrass essential oil may not be one of the most common essential oils, but it sure offers lots of benefits-and a refreshing, natural lemon scent-when used in products for our skin and hair.
